Dear Luca,
You are five. FIVE. People often say raising children happens quickly; you're holding a teeny tiny newborn one day and the next, you're helping them move into their first apartment. And this is true, this strange time lapsing effect. But it's also misleading in a way and it doesn't give truth to the long grueling work of mothering. Commercials and cards will sell you a picture of motherhood as sweet and tender, and it most certainly is in the quiet moments of some days. But quiet moments with children are rare, and most smart mothers are usually asleep during those moments and unable to notice the gentle quality in the air. Rather, motherhood is fierce and protective. It calls for grit and sweat. It calls for stamina and sheer will on most days. Motherhood is a beast before a beauty.
Mothering an independent and smart five year old boy is a practice in so many things. It is a practice in speed and agility, as I run behind you on your bike or scooter. You are fast and competent, a great little athlete. It is a practice in submission, as you tell me to stop interrupting you, to stop talking, so you can ask me many questions - all of which are rich and layered. Today, you shushed me at the museum and said, "I have to ask you something. I know saber tooth tigers and polar bears never lived together, but who do you think would win a battle?" You are a critical thinker, always asking about space and animals. Different parts of the world and dinosaurs. Mothering you my boy, is a practice in letting go of expectations, as you surprise me often and remind me to allow people to reveal themselves. You will gently tell me you love me at odd times, not when I might be expecting it. It was revealed to me that you are quite shy at school, and an exceptional listener - always following the rules and avoiding conflict with other children. "My son?" I asked when this bit of information was shared. But I realized after reflecting that it makes perfect sense, to be surprised by your many angles. Mothering you is a practice in acceptance, as I just accept what is and what isn't. It is a practice in being present and letting go of control. You, Luca Lane, are on a spectacular journey and watching it unfold as your mother is a practice in love. Happy 5th birthday dear boy.
